The Bitter Southerner has a single aim: to uncover the American South in all its truth and complexity — and in the process to break stereotypes about the region and its people by pushing out important, difficult, uncomfortable, irreverent, witty, and addictive stories. This large format full color magazine aims to highlight the beautiful and strange South.
In Issue No. 13 you may notice a theme.
It’s a loose theme, but there is a good bit of Tennessee here — including our gorgeous cover star, the brilliant Gillian Welch.
Landon Nordeman photographed Gillian, a folk icon and national treasure, at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville, and we did so during an ice storm with power outages everywhere. A day and a cover story we’ll never forget! We can’t wait for you to read Jewly Hight’s story.
Celebrity chef, Carla Hall penned our “Letter from Home” about her childhood home in Nashville. Tayari Jones’ excerpt from her new hit novel, KIN, begins at Ruby Falls just outside of Chattanooga and a few miles down the road from Ben Mims’ experience at Little Debbie Snack Cake world headquarters! There’s a therapy session for America and a great piece on leaving America. Also in this issue, there are poems from Alabama and Florida, illustrations from the UK and Berlin, and two stories from Paris, France.
Issue No. 13 is good.
